When I started KMAA, I started it with $2,000 that one of my students gave me (Debbie) and I started it in my garage; and it was an awful garage. I hope you're not thinking of a fancy garage with multiple parking spots. My house was in the hood. I lived next to a crack addict. The garage didn't have any heating or cooling, other than an underpowered window unit we installed. The roof leaked and we constantly had a problem with moisture. Camel crickets, regular crickets, and bugs of various types were constantly invading the mats. We washed the mats, cleaned them as best we cool and did all we could to get rid of the excessive moisture and leaks from the ceiling. I remember me and Eric Lunsford out in the garage busting up some concrete in various spots so we could lay the mats down. Some people came and went over the 3 or so years that KMAA was only in my garage. My only real students during that time were Debbie, Eric Lunsford, Joey Zonar, Ovince Saint Preux, Christopher Wright, and Kent Parris.
My wife had just given birth to a beautiful, baby girl (Elys) but Elys was pretty cholic-y for the first 6 months. My wife, as a lot of wife's do, struggled with post partum, so while she was an amazing mother she struggled sometimes. One of the few things that made Elys stop crying was to drive her around, so I drove a million miles over every road in Knoxville just so my wife could get some peace and quiet. I would go to UT in the morning, drive Elys in the afternoon, teach martial arts in the evenings, and work over night shifts at Kohl's during the night. Repeat for around 2 years.
We didn't have much money and what money we did have, we weren't very good stewards of. I remember working out with Vince and Joey and KUB came to turn the power off at the house. We finished our workout in the dark with some flashlights and then I tried to figure a way to get the power turned on (that eventually ended up being the grace and largesse of my mom and dad). Those weeks, months, and years were HARD; VERY HARD.
Maybe there was a better way to do it. Maybe I should have done X or Y or Z. Maybe.
All I know was that my only hope of changing my life for the better I put into the boat of, "be the best martial arts coach I could possibly be." I didn't really have any other choices because I didn't have many other appreciable skills (studying Philosophy & Religious Studies at UT wasn't putting me on the fast track for fame and riches).
Eventually I taught for GM Eun out of TTJC West Knoxville, where I met Joey and Lisa Kashif. Eventually Lisa Kashif that invited me to teach at her school. Eventually her school became my school (with her blessing and support). Eventually I moved from there to the YMCA where we rolled the mats out every day and back up every evening. Eventually I met Char and TTJC Oak Ridge where I met Emilee Gettys (King) and James Adcock. Eventually I got my own room at the YMCA. Eventually I got the space next to the Cotton Eye'd Joe's. Eventually one of my contacts I met coaching at Lisa's school helped me open a satellite school in Pigeon Forge, where I met the love of my life Taylor Turner. Eventually I ended up in the old Sevier Heights basement. Eventually we fought Jon Joes for the UFC light heavy weight title. Through that fight I plus all my savings, I purchased the Pease building. Eventually we sold that and moved to where we are now. There's a whole lifetime between the garage and where we are now.
So, why do I tell you all this? Because you too can change your life.
If you're waiting for the perfect moment, it'll never come. If you're waiting for the stars to align, they won't. If not you, who? If not now, when? Ain't nobody stopping you but you. Can't nobody stop you but you.
Start now. Start tired. Start broke. Start with a new baby. Start with a challenging relationship. Start without a plan how to get from where you are to where you want to be. Start without any supporters. Start with the power shut off. Start while you're in school. Start with a cholic-y baby. Start while you're driving a million miles a week. Start while you work overnight shifts. Just start.
And I'm not saying "start martial arts training," I'm saying start the thing that you feel called to do. Start the thing that feels like it's right even if everything else in your life feels wrong. Start the relationship that might cause problems. Start the business with -$268.68 in your bank account. Burn the ships and leap off the cliff knowing you'll have to build an airplane on the way down.

In a world where "good enough" is often accepted as the norm, it’s easy to overlook the profound difference between being merely good and truly great. At KMAA we don't offer "self defense classes" because self defense classes are 99.99999% useless. Going someone and taking a 2 hour class on "self defense" is often worse than doing nothing at all. When we are asked to do "self defense" seminars/classes/etc. we rarely do them and when we do, we spend 2 hours talking about how important it is to actually train to fight if you are serious about "self defense."
The reason for that? Self Defense is HARD. Let me explain.
There are dangerous moves in martial arts. Techniques that would probably injure someone very significantly if they were employed. However, in almost all the situation's I've run across in my more than 30 years in the martial arts world, every person I've met with "too dangerous to do in sparring" techniques couldn't touch my face with active resistance, let alone gouge my eyes out. I did have a Filipino Martial Arts Instructor break one of my toes while grappling him... I immediately triangled him (he tapped) and kept grappling. He was shocked I didn't stop or cry out in pain or give up. He broke a bone, I shut off blood to his brain. Tell me which one is more dangerous in a "fight"?
Arts like Krav Maga or your Uncles "Karate-Jeet-Judo-Boxing-do" are rarely pressure tested against skilled opponents. When those arts integrate "aliveness" (ie sparring, situation sparring, etc.) their efficacy goes through the roof! When they don't, they're likely to get your murdered and/or raped.
When a person knows that they are completely unprepared to fight anyone, they avoid dangerous situations. When people think they can defend themselves they often take unnecessary risks. I've been training professional fighters (boxers, kickboxers, MMA fighters, etc.) for more than 25 years and I've seen them get into situations where the Fight, Flight, or Freeze response kicks in and they just freeze. I've seen it happen to my fighters. I've seen it happen to other fighters. If athletes who are trained to fight, want to fight, dedicate their whole lives to fighting sometimes freeze up, then it can happen to you as well!
Just because you and your friends went to a 2 hours seminar on self defense does not mean, in any way, that you're prepared to protect yourself. Train in an art like Boxing, BJJ, Wrestling, Kickboxing, or MMA for 3-5 years. THEN add in additional arts like Eskrima, Krav Maga, etc. THEN you're in the realm of being able to defend yourself.
Why doesn't KMAA just offer a "self defense" class then? Well, we do! We offer them in the form of Kickboxing (where sprawling is a regular part of the curriculum), BJJ (where MMA gloves are worn in every class by those who want to wear them and 10 punches counts as a submission), and in our MMA classes. These things are significantly more effective at defending yourself than the, "Do Technique One-Step #47 class!"
It would be nice if we could choreograph fights. If I spend weeks studying someone's film and then training every day, I can sometimes predict what will happen in a fight. I have no hope of predicting the behavior of the countless criminals, mentally unstable people, and domestic violence partners that people sometimes choose; unfortunately neither do you. So, while I wish it could be as simple as "learn this one technique and no can defense" like Mr. Miyagi's Crane Technique, such a thing isn't for this world.
The other side of that coin is the "well, combat sports have too many rules for me, I just see red and go crazy when I'm in a fight" is absolute nonsense. Even those teachers that embrace the "this is self defense" class structure have WAY more rules than combat sports do "don't touch the eyes, they're too dangerous!" or "go slow!" or "don't actually hit your partner" or "if you did X in 'real life' no one can defend themselves." When I was coming up in the arts, we regularly sparred MMA with kicks to a downed opponent, groin strikes were perfectly legal, head butts were fine, etc. I'm still here. I have 3 amazing children. I survived. I adapted. It wasn't that hard.
As you can tell, I'm not a fan of "self defense" classes in general. Are there good ones out there? Absolutely. There are diamonds in the rough. If you want realistic self defense, come train with us. If you want edged weapons training and some very good hand-to-hand techniques then go to the Inayan Eskrima gym. That's about it when it comes to people I would trust my life to or your life to for that matter.
If you want to be able to defend yourself, learn to fight. Then pray you never have to use it.

Physical activity is a key component of the Little Dragons class, helping to instill a love for staying active. This early introduction to a healthy lifestyle is a proactive approach to combating childhood obesity and promoting lifelong health.
As children achieve small victories in class, whether mastering a new move or successfully participating in a group task, their self-esteem and confidence grow. These achievements are celebrated, reinforcing positive self-image and the joy of learning.
The Little Dragons class helps enhance attention and concentration through engaging and age-appropriate activities. Improved focus and the ability to pay attention are skills that will serve children well in academic settings and beyond.

In the Ecological/Constraints-Led Approach, constraints are strategically imposed conditions that guide athletes toward discovering optimal movement patterns and decision-making strategies. These constraints can be categorized into three types: task, environmental, and individual. Task constraints might involve rules or objectives of a drill that require athletes to adapt their strategies. Environmental constraints include changes in the playing surface or weather conditions, while individual constraints focus on modifying an athlete’s use of equipment or even limiting the use of certain limbs during practice.
The principles underlying these constraints stem from the core concepts of the sport itself—principles like leverage, balance, timing, and efficiency. Understanding these principles is crucial because they provide the rationale behind the constraints and help athletes understand the 'why' behind their actions. Coaches play a vital role in elucidating these principles, making sure that athletes not only follow the constraints but also grasp their purpose and the desired outcomes they aim to achieve.
Exploration within the CLA framework is a process where athletes are encouraged to try out various approaches within the set constraints to discover what works best. This method of learning is inherently personal and experiential. It promotes a deep engagement with the task at hand, requiring athletes to constantly assess and reassess their actions and responses based on immediate feedback from their environment and performance.
However, for exploration to be effective, it must be directed and purposeful. Coaches help in steering this exploratory process by setting up scenarios that are challenging yet conducive to learning. This might involve creating game-like situations that mirror competition conditions or drills that emphasize specific skills. Athletes are encouraged to experiment with different tactics and techniques, learning to adjust their performance based on the outcomes they experience. Deliberate practice in CLA is about focused, intentional repetition of skills within the constraints set by the coach. At KMAA, everyone takes responsibility for themselves and their environment, an ethos captured by the phrase "sweeping the shed." This principle teaches us that no one is above doing the smallest task that benefits all. This applies to everyone, all the time. Backstage, after an event, is notoriously messy and dirty. Not so for KMAA athletes. I personally dedicate a significant amount of time to reading—a practice inspired by the habits of Fortune 500 CEOs who, on average, read five books a month. While I am not a CEO of a massive corporation, I strive to match this thirst for knowledge, averaging about 1.5 books a week, which totals nearly 80 books a year. My reading is complemented by listening to lectures and skill-specific podcasts across a broad spectrum of topics. This commitment to learning helps me not only in becoming a better leader and coach but also in being a well-rounded person.
The knowledge gained from books and other resources is not left on the shelf. At KMAA, we put theory into practice. Starting with small-scale experiments, I test new ideas and methodologies personally. Once these have proven successful on a small scale, we begin integrating them into our classes. This methodical approach ensures that by the time a new method reaches our gym-wide curriculum, it has been thoroughly vetted and adapted to meet the specific needs of our students.
