"Joining KMAA was the best decision I ever made. Learning from Coach Eric shaped my life and my career. Without his guidance I wouldn't have been able to succeed the was I have throughout my fighting career."
(Former UFC Light Heavy Weight Title Challenger and Long-Time UFC athlete)

"I came here 345 lbs at a low point in my life. Committing to just 3 days a week got me down to 213 lbs and full of confidence about myself. I have been pushed deep within myself to pull someone new out. Aside from that the people here are professional, fun, and family-oriented I cannot express how important that is. I would suggest anyone commit to 3 days here and see how it impacts your life. One of the best decisions I have ever made!"

"In just the few short practices that Eric and the KMAA team have worked with me on, I already feel like part of family. I’ve know Professor Eric for years and have always had a high level of respect and admiration for him. Now getting the chance to be apart of the team in preparation for my 11th professional fight has been nothing short of extraordinary. The environment, the culture, the people, and coaches is simply second to none. As long as I continue to decide to make walks to the cage, KMAA will be a huge part of my life so long as they are willing to put up with my old but. Everyone from top to bottom day 1 or 1000 there is a place for you on this team!"
(Owner and Head Coach of multiple gyms in Kentucky)

"I truly don't even think I can put into words how amazing this place and the people here are. Gave me the strength and confidence to get back into gear after my baby! Truly blessed I came across this place!"

"I can't even begin to tell you what KMAA means to our family. My son started classes here almost two years ago in Little Dragons with Coach Chris and Coach Emilee and I was blown away with how, patient, respectful and genuinely caring they are with each child. My son has gained so much confidence because of them and KMAA.
My only personal regret is that I didn't start classes myself sooner. When I finally worked up the nerve to try a class 6 months ago it instantly felt like I found a part of me I didn't know was missing. Coach Jason is an incredible kickboxing coach who instantly made me feel welcome and also made sure my daughter felt included when she joined us over her break. I love how each instructor breaks things down so you can understand it and they are all so patient.
KMAA is definitely a family affair for the Wilders. Coach David's BJJ class has given my husband and I a new activity to learn and grow at together and we look forward to those classes each week. I guess to make a long story short, if you're thinking about taking classes but just haven't made the leap yet this is your sign to JUMP! I PROMISE you won't regret it."

Most gyms teach "moves" through dead drills and rote memorization. At KMAA, we don't teach scripts—we teach you the "why" behind every technique using Constraints-Led Approach (CLA) and our data-driven KMAA Process. Real fights are chaos, not choreography. We train adaptability, fight IQ, resilience, and emotional regulation through live games and resistance from day one. Born in a 10'x10' garage, we've spent 27 years turning beginners into people who handle life’s storms with calm and integrity. We’re not here to make you look like a fighter—we’re here to make you one.
No. You train to get in shape—you don’t get in shape to train. Everyone starts exactly where you are. We’ve had beginners post-stroke (including Coach Eric), our oldest member is 76, and every UFC/Bellator pro in our Hall of Fame began as "I know nothing." We meet you where you are, adapt everything, and scale intensity to your goals. Limitations are mental—if the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear infinite.
We have dedicated programs for kids starting at age 3:
- Little Dragons (3–5) – play-based intro
- Youth BJJ & Youth MMA (6–12) – fundamentals through games
- Adults (13+) have BJJ, Kickboxing, and MMA classes with morning and evening options.
All programs focus on whole-human development: physical skill + mental resilience + character.
No. Age is not a barrier—it's just a number. Our oldest member is 76 and still trains. Coach Eric started martial arts after a series of strokes. We’ve had people in their 50s, 60s, and 70s become regular members and transform their health and confidence. We meet you exactly where you are, adapt every drill, and focus on principles (balance, leverage, breathing) that work at any age. The mats don’t care how old you are—they care how consistent you are. If you can move, you can train. If you’re breathing, you’re ready.
No—you will never be the only beginner. We train mixed levels in every class, and we’ve done so for more than 27 years. It’s not uncommon for someone’s first day to be alongside people preparing for UFC, Bellator, Invicta, or PFL fights. That’s intentional. You learn faster when you’re around better training partners. The veterans help the newcomers, the newcomers remind the veterans why they started. Everyone was a beginner once—even our pros. We scale everything, pair thoughtfully, and foster a culture where helping others is part of the training. We live and die by "Ubuntu" ("I am because we are.") You belong from day one.
Absolutely not. Sparring and competition are optional paths. Many students train purely for fitness, self-defense, confidence, or life resilience—and they’re just as valued. We have hobbyists who never compete and fighters who do. You decide what the mats mean to you.
Now, if you want to spar? That's a different story. Here are our criteria for sparring at KMAA:
Beginner sparring (6 pm on Fridays) requires:
- Minimum of 3 months training
- Be a current member
- 2 hours training per week
Intermediate (6 pm sparring + 3 rounds in pro sparring on Fridays):
- Minimum of 6 months training
- Be a current member
- 3 hours training per week
- we allow some drop ins for this class, so if you're a competitor or a person looking to be a competitor and we know you well, you're welcome to drop in. Our beginner sparring is for actual beginners. No one gets to come in, smack people around because they have significantly higher skill, and then bounce. Anyone who attempts that is immediately bumped to pro sparring and they MUST finish that hour.
Advanced (7 pm on Fridays):
- Minimum of 1 year training
- 4 hours training per week
- we do allow drop ins for this class, so if you're an advanced competitor (high level amateur or professional) you're always welcome on the mats at KMAA
The unfortunate reality of life is that yes, you can get hurt—just like you can get hurt playing basketball, riding a bike, or walking down stairs. But at KMAA we take safety extremely seriously. We have strict rules: tap is sacred (immediate stop), "No" is a complete sentence, no ego on the mats, and we teach smart, principle-based movement from day one. Our Constraints-Led Approach builds resilience and body awareness so you learn to protect yourself before you ever push limits. We’ve trained tens of thousands of students over 27 years—including UFC pros—and injuries are rare when people respect the process. Communicate injuries upfront, we adapt everything, and we prioritize longevity over ego. The mats are a place to grow, not get broken.
Our trial is $20 for 3 classes. That’s it—no hidden fees, no long-term contracts, no bait-and-switch. After the trial, memberships are priced at a premium because we deliver premium: 27 years of garage-born grit, Olympic-level Constraints-Led Approach, data-driven KMAA Process training, clean facility, small group sizes, and a culture that treats every student like family. You’re paying for real transformation—physical sovereignty, mental resilience, and the confidence that comes from knowing you can handle chaos.
When it comes to our monthly tuition, we are not the cheapest gym in Knoxville, and we’re not trying to be. Think of it like buying a car. If someone were to ask the question: "How much is a car?" The answer is: "What you can afford." The cheapest car is probably a death-trap, held together with duct tape and hope. However, if you want a car that will keep you (& your family!) safe, is built with quality that actually works as intended under pressure, protects you from hidden costs and constant problems, delivers real performance when you need it most, and gives you peace of mind when you get behind the wheel, you'll have to pay a little more.
The same is true of martial arts. At KMAA, we are not the cheapest. We are the best.
If you want the lowest price in town, there are plenty of options. If you want the best, you’re in the right place. Pricing details available upon request or after your trial. Ask us anything!
For those that want to train with us, but legitimately can't afford training (not because they spend their money on foolish things like bars and partying), we have partnered with a 501(c)3 not-for-profit entity called The Elysium Organization. The Elysium Organization helps subsidize costs associated with training tuition, purchasing training equipment, and even helps bear the cost of competition. If you've got questions about that, we've got answers!
Keep it simple and functional—comfort and safety come first.
- Wear athletic shorts or leggings (no zippers, belts, or pockets that can snag) and a t-shirt or rash guard.
- No shoes on the mats (bare feet or clean grappling shoes/socks only).
- Remove all jewelry (rings, watches, earrings, necklaces)—they can cause injury.
- Trim fingernails and toenails short (seriously—long nails are "claws" on the mat).
- Bring a water bottle and a towel .
- For BJJ/MMA: a gi is optional for your first class (you can borrow one if needed); no-gi is fine.
- For Kickboxing: athletic shoes are okay for warm-up, but barefoot or grappling shoes once on the mat.
We’ll get you sorted if you forget anything. Just show up ready to train—no ego, no excuses. See you on the mats.
No—quite the opposite. Our kids programs (Little Dragons, Youth BJJ, Youth MMA) teach important Life Skills such as respect, emotional regulation, boundaries, and empathy first. We use play-based games and Constraints-Led Approach to build confidence and self-control, not aggression. Kids learn "No is a complete sentence," how to stay calm under pressure, and how to help others (Ubuntu spirit). Parents consistently tell us their children become more focused, respectful, and resilient at home and school—not more aggressive.
There’s no single "best" age—it depends on the child. Little Dragons (3–5) is perfect for early coordination, confidence, and social skills through play. Ages 6–12 (Youth BJJ/MMA) is ideal for building fundamentals, problem-solving, and respect. But any age is fine—we meet kids exactly where they are. The earlier they start, the more the lessons become lifelong habits, but we’ve had 12-year-olds join and thrive just as much as 6-year-olds. Come try a trial class—your child will tell you if it’s the right fit.
We have coached children at three years old that are doctors now. We have watched our Youth students grow up and climb Mount Everest. The tremendous upside to KMAA is that we have HISTORY-history. And we have that because we've successfully helped so many people - so many children - become the very person they dreamed of becoming. Our history is our testimonial.
Our job is to help people become better. We're still here because we've been successfully doing that for decades now.
Very little—keep it simple:
- Athletic shorts or leggings (no zippers/pockets)
- T-shirt or rash guard
- Clean bare feet (no shoes on mats) or clean socks/grappling shoes
- Water bottle
- Optional: Mouthguard for older kids if they want
We provide trial gis or gear if needed. Trim nails short. No jewelry. We’ll get them set up—focus on showing up ready to have fun.
Yes—safety is non-negotiable. We use age-appropriate games, controlled task, and strict supervision. No hard sparring for kids. We teach respect, boundaries, and emotional regulation from day one. Parents are always welcome to watch.
Youth BJJ focuses on ground fighting, leverage, submissions, and escapes—great for building problem-solving and confidence. Youth MMA adds striking and basic wrestling for a full mixed experience. Both use our play-based CLA method. Many kids do both (4 days/week) for the best development.
Start with whatever excites you most! Here is a general description of each art:
- BJJ: ground fighting, leverage, self-defense against larger opponents
- Kickboxing: striking, fitness, stand-up confidence
- MMA: full integration of everything
All use our live, resistant training—no dead drills. Many adults cross-train once comfortable.
Yes—our focus on real adaptability and problem-solving under pressure makes it highly effective. We teach principles (balance, leverage, timing) that work in chaos, not scripted moves. BJJ is especially strong for close-range control; Kickboxing/MMA add stand-up tools. But the biggest self-defense skill is mental sovereignty—staying calm when it matters.
In addition, when most people think of "self-defense" they think of a dark alley, a bad person threatening you harm, and some movie highlight-reel death move that defeats them. Over our 27 year history, self-defense often looks like an uncle that got a little too tipsy, a loved one that is incensed and loses control over themselves, and your friend who thinks "one more bar" is a good idea. In those situations, gouging their eyes out, kicking them in the groin, and stomping on their face once they're down isn't the best idea. Self-defense is a spectrum.
The "domestic" issues we described above (plus the more challenging ones everyone knows about but no one wants to talk about) don't call for keys-in-the-hand, kick-to-the-groin, and screaming "That's my purse! I don't know you!" You want to be able to guide them, gently with underhooks and postural alignment to a more neutral place. You want to control them enough to keep them from hurting you, but also from hurting themself, you want to show that you care and keep yourself safe, while keeping them safe as well. KMAA is built to handle these "self-defense" situations as well.
Now, if you find yourself in a dark alley, with a bad person threatening you harm... KMAA has handled those situations extremely well also. It won't be fancy, but it will get messy and the most important thing is you'll be able to leave alive.
Also, stay out of dark alleys and be aware of who is around you.
Make better life choices there homie.
Our Kickboxing is MMA-based, not sport-specific kickboxing or pure Muay Thai competition style. It’s built for the street and for MMA, so we have to account for takedowns, shots, clinch work, and transitions—things most traditional kickboxing/Muay Thai gyms don’t even consider.
Yes, our stance is a little wider. Yes, we keep a longer distance than some styles. But we also train to defend against being taken down, to sprawl, to control posture, and to fight from every range. We use Constraints-Led Approach so you understand the "why" behind every strike, kick, and clinch—not just how to copy it. If you want pure Muay Thai ruleset or point-kickboxing, we’re not that gym. If you want striking that actually works in real chaos (self-defense or MMA), this is it.
"Good" isn't something you buy, download, or discard after a few months. It's not a destination—it's the ongoing process of becoming someone who has their life together.
Training at KMAA is an investment in yourself, not a service you purchase. One of my heroes, Genki Sudo, said it best:
"We train in 3 dimensions (H-L-W; the mats), to live in 4 dimensions (the 4th dimension being time)."
You will be able to handle yourself against the majority of the world's populace in about a year of consistent training (2–3 sessions per week). In around 180 days (roughly 6 months), most students feel real competence and sovereignty on the mats—enough to move with calm under pressure and make smart decisions in chaos.
But far more important than "are you skilled" is who you are becoming through the process. The discipline of showing up, pushing your edge, tapping when you need to, helping your partner, and staying coachable on the mats carries over directly to every off-mat area of your life: your work ethic, your relationships, your ability to handle stress, your integrity when no one is watching. That is the real transformation. That is the 4th dimension.
The cheapest gym is cheap for a reason—low standards, no depth, no real change. At KMAA we are not the cheapest, because we are not selling a product. We are offering a path to becoming the type of person you've always wanted to be: resilient, focused, emotionally regulated, and capable of standing in any storm with grace.
There is no shortcut. But if you commit to the Process—not just the Outcome—you'll look back in a year and realize the person staring back in the mirror is someone you deeply respect. If you get the privilege to train with us you'll hear this a LOT:
"Hold the Vision, trust the Process."
Yes. We’ve produced more high-level talent than all the other gyms in Tennessee combined—fighters in the UFC, Bellator, Invicta, PFL, and regional circuits. We don’t just “train fighters”—we develop athletes from zero to the highest levels. Our Constraints-Led Approach and KMAA Process (built from analyzing thousands of fights) give you the tools to win under real pressure. If you want to compete, we’ll build a personalized roadmap, intensify training, and hold you accountable. But competition is optional—many students train for life, not the cage.
Absolutely. We’ve done it before—from managing an athlete from nothing to a UFC title fight (Ovince Saint Preux is proof). We 100% can get you there if you have the work ethic, consistency, and coachability. It starts with mastering fundamentals through our CLA method, then building fight IQ with live, resistant training and KMAA Process data. We’ll intensify your program, get you in front of the right matchmakers, and support you every step. But it’s not easy—it’s earned. If you’re serious, book your trial and prove it on the mats.
As you walk down the hallway and see the KMAA "Hall of Fame" there' no reason you can't be on it. Every one of those people started out "bad." Every one. Every single one of them had a first day. The trick is, they never had a "last day" and that made all the difference.
Safer than most people think, and far safer than doing nothing. BJJ and MMA are contact sports, so minor bumps and bruises happen—but serious injuries are uncommon when training is smart. We use progressive resistance, live games, and our CLA method to teach you how to move efficiently and protect yourself under pressure. Tap early and often, communicate limitations, and we scale everything. Our oldest member is 76, Coach Eric started post-strokes, and we’ve never had a catastrophic injury in 27 years. The real risk? Sitting on the couch and letting life’s chaos catch you unprepared. Training here builds the physical and mental tools to stay safe in the real world.
If you're concerned that our MMA program will just be "Fight Club" and on your first day, "you have to fight." We don't do that. We are polite, we are professional, we have a syllabus that has worked in the past, is working now, and will continue to work in the future. We know what works and what doesn't. We've built systems for everything. We will happily teach you how to stand and move your feet right next to someone preparing for the biggest fight of their life.
