We Don't Create Followers.
We Cultivate Individuals.

At Knoxville Martial Arts Academy, we're more than a gym—we're a deliberate Whānau (extended family), a third place where like-minded warriors build unbreakable bonds, elite skills, and real confidence. Founded on sacrifice and heart, we combine world-class ecological/CLA training, data-driven results, uncompromising safety through CombatCare, and accessible training via The Elysium Organization so every brave soul can train without barriers. This page shares our culture, our why, and the people who make it all happen.

One Academy.
Five Reasons We’re Different.

Intentional family culture, smarter methods that accelerate skill, elite training that wins, uncompromising safety, and scholarships for the courageous.

Whānau Culture

At KMAA, “Whānau” (pronounced "FAH-now") — a core Māori concept referring to extended family, encompassing three or four generations living together or closely connected — isn’t a buzzword, it’s our deliberate promise of extended family. We intentionally mix kickboxers with BJJ players, beginners with pros, adults with kids, so no one ever feels like an outsider; you walk in as a stranger and leave with brothers, sisters, cousins who truly have your back. This unbreakable sense of belonging is why people stay for years, build lifelong friendships, and find a true third place in a disconnected world.

Our Training Philosophy

Most gyms drill static techniques in lines and hope they work in chaos. We don’t. We use the Constraints-Led Approach (Ecological Dynamics) to create alive, game-like training that builds real timing, decision-making, creativity, and fight feel—skills that actually transfer when it counts. This modern method turns practice into instinctive adaptation, so you’re not just repeating moves—you’re developing the intelligence and adaptability that wins under real pressure, faster than traditional drilling ever could.

The KMAA Process

The KMAA Process is our proprietary, data-driven system that distills exactly what wins at the highest levels of combat sports—leaving every other gym (even the “big” ones) far behind. Built from decades of elite coaching experience, relentless in-house testing, and ruthless focus on proven outcomes, it turns good athletes into dominant competitors who finish fights, stay composed under fire, and progress at an accelerated pace no one else can match. This is the private edge that makes our fighters light years ahead—and why serious competitors choose KMAA when they’re ready to stop playing catch-up.

CombatCare

Combat sports demand trust and close contact, yet most gyms rely on “common sense” to protect students—leaving power dynamics unchecked and vulnerable people exposed. We built CombatCare, our proprietary safety protocol adapted from SafeSport but engineered specifically for grappling and striking, with mandatory 12-week coach onboarding focused entirely on consent, boundaries, and spotting grooming. At KMAA, emotional and psychological safety is as non-negotiable as physical safety—because elite training should never come at the cost of anyone’s well-being.

Elysium Organization

Named after my daughter Elysium—who sacrificed childhood time with her dad so this academy could rise from poverty—our 501(c)3 exists to make elite martial arts accessible to anyone with a warrior’s heart. Through scholarships, donated gear, and competition funding, we remove financial barriers for survivors of domestic violence, at-risk youth, foster families, marginalized individuals, and veterans who need this training most. Courage, not cash, determines who belongs here.

The Complete Martial Arts Experience

Intentional Whānau culture, ecological Constraints-Led training, the elite KMAA Process,
non-negotiable CombatCare safety, and barrier-free TEO scholarships, — five pillars no other gym combines into one complete experience.

We don't offer pieces of the puzzle. We deliver the entire picture.

Meet the Whānau

This isn’t just a team of coaches—it’s your extended family on the mats. At KMAA, “Whānau” means we treat every member like brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, or parents who show up for you, hold you accountable, and push you to become your best self. You’ll never train alone here: our coaches are deliberately chosen and trained to build real bonds across every class and background, so you walk in as a newcomer and leave as part of something unbreakable.

Eric Turner

Eric Turner is the founder of KMAA and the long-time head coach. For decades he taught every class, went to every fight, did every thing. Now, though, he doesn't have to be as hands on and is happy to turn over much of the day-to-day activities of KMAA to Jason King and Emilee King who will one day take over completely from him.

About Coach Eric:

I founded Knoxville Martial Arts Academy from nothing—back when my family and I were living in extreme poverty—and every brick of this place was laid with sacrifice, including my oldest daughter Elysium giving up precious childhood time with her dad so others could find sanctuary here. That personal story became the heartbeat of KMAA and The Elysium Organization, and it still drives me every day.

I’m a husband, father, son, mentor, minister, and unapologetically a Christian. My faith shapes who I am at the deepest level, but I never require it to be yours. What I do require is heart: the willingness to show up, confront your limits, and grow through honest effort.

To me, martial arts is far more than technique or competition—it’s one of the last honest places left to face your shadows, rewrite your internal story, and become whole. I pour everything into my students because I’ve seen the mats turn fear into calm, doubt into confidence, and isolation into unbreakable family. My deepest drive is helping you prove—to yourself—that with the right system (our ecological/CLA + data-driven KMAA Process) and the right tribe (our deliberate Whānau), you’re capable of exponentially more than you currently believe.

I do not believe in giving you the answers, but designing the specific environment where the truth reveals itself to you through your own effort. I view martial arts as a system of self-exploration, so instead of demanding you mimic my movement, I curate tasks that allow you to solve problems in a way that is authentic to your body and mind. This ensures that you never become a clone of me, but rather the most effective, honest version of yourself. I provide the framework for the journey, but you do the work to discover your own Martial Arts "Style.

Founder / Head Coach

Taylor Turner

Taylor Turner is Coach Eric Turner's wife and one of KMAA's longest active students and coaches. Having been at KMAA for more than 17 years Taylor has competed actively as an MMA athlete, a long-distance runner, and a scholarship rowing athlete for the University of Minnesota.

About Coach Taylor:

I love MMA and KMAA is not only where I'm blessed to work, but also where I get to get lost from the worlds cares in the community and fun of the sport as well, so "outside" the gym you'll actually find me inside the gym! Running is another passion of mine so you might see me running along different streets and greenways of all of the surrounding towns! My favorite place to run is Disney World for all the RunDisney races! In addition to that, I love travel with my family and my husband. Seeing the world makes me feel alive! My 12 year old is very active and I'm often found cheering him on at various activities. I coach girls wrestling at Seymour high school and personal train people who have become dear friends to me(helping people reach goals is definitely a place I find purpose!) I also have a big goofy dog, Olaf, who I play with all the time!

I have personally deeply felt and am blessed to truly know how reaching goals, being physically stronger and having a supportive community around you makes this life so much better. I find great rewards in helping others experience all those things too!

My super power is that I don't sit still in life well, and that has led me to learn a lot about athletics and MMA/BJJ/Kickboxing in general. Not only have I learned formally through schooling, but I've been doing this for so long and tried so many different things that I have over 20 years of experience in what works and what doesn't!! So if there an "issue" I have either been through it or know someone who has so the path is not foreign!

I teach Kickboxing and BJJ mostly! I also lead strength and conditioning for our athletes.

Martial Arts Experience:

- Blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

- Black Band (Black Belt equivalent) in KMAA's MMA style (Wazakishindo)

- Professional MMA fighter
- Bellator FC veteran
- ACE certified personal trainer (17 years experience)

Coach / Athlete

Jason King

Jason King has been studying martial arts for more than 30 years. Originally starting in Tae Kwon Do, Jason King joined KMAA from a gym in Johnson City and has blossomed under the KMAA banner. Along with his wife, Emilee King, Jason is dedicated to being the best Head Coach that it is possible to be and ensuring that the legacy started under Coach Eric will continue to thrive for many years and decades after he retires; thus making it possible for even more people to experience the great blessing that comes from KMAA's unique style of martial arts instruction.

About Coach Jason:

As a full time coach, bodywork therapist, and personal trainer, you’ll typically see me in the gym more often than not! I am blessed with a beautiful wife and daughter, and my time outside the gym is typically spent with them. I enjoy being outdoors, food that isn’t on any diet program, and getting sucked into rabbit holes about random topics. I am notorious for watching 1-2 episodes of a show and then reading the rest of the plot to save time, with the only exception in recent memory being Ted Lasso.

I started martial arts over 30 years ago in an attempt to become the red Power Ranger. While I may have fallen short of that goal, martial arts has provided the foundation for my entire life. The virtues and lessons learned on the mats are what molded me into who I am today, and I feel called to pass those lessons on to the next generation. It is my hope and prayer that I take the knowledge I’ve been given and help others be the best versions of themselves, on and off the mats.

My superpower is being able to see how bodies move, and then identifying what parts of the movement chain can be modified for maximum efficiency. I love the nuts and bolts of athletic movement in any sport, and have a wide field of knowledge to translate one movement solution to another. I have a deep love for the “art” in martial arts, and enjoy bringing that aspect out of each student I interact with.

While I’m primarily known as a kickboxing coach, I teach all of our adult programs on a regular basis. If you have a question about any topic, I will likely have an answer! And if I don’t, I will direct you to the person I know who does!

Martial Arts Experience:

- Blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
- Black Band (Black Belt equivalent) in KMAA's MMA style (Wazakishindo)

- Black Band (Black Belt equivalent) in KMAA's striking style
- 4th Degree Blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do

- 2nd Degree Blackbelt in Kobudo (traditional Japanese weapons)
- Professional MMA fighter (retired)
- Professional Boxer (retired)

- Professional Kickboxer (retired)
- Bellator FC veteran

Head Coach / Athlete (retired)

Emilee King

Emilee King is one of Coach Eric's longest-standing students—training with me since she was 13. Over the years she’s transformed from dedicated kid to elite competitor and now a cornerstone coach at KMAA. She has been a fiery, aggressive, kind, compassionate person since she was a teenager and it's been a real privilege watching her grow and change. Before she joined KMAA as a full-time competitor and coach, she was a Registered Nurse with an emphasis on geriatric care. Emilee has a great heart for young children and more mature adults. You won't find a more fierce competitor or a more loyal friend than "Emilou Who!" (Coach Eric likes to give nicknames out...)

About Coach Emilee:

Outside the mats, you’ll find me fully embracing life as a wife, mom, backyard chicken wrangler, and flour-dusted baker—because nothing says “I love you” like homemade treats that motivate you to hit the gym harder the next day. Every role I play—coach, mother, wife—is deeply rooted in faith and the quiet conviction that real growth comes from trusting the process, one intentional step at a time.

I’ve been training in martial arts since I was six years old, and I’ve felt firsthand how the mats build not just a stronger body, but a clearer mind and a more grounded spirit. That lifelong impact is why I pour my heart into passing the legacy forward—especially in Little Dragons class. There’s nothing better than playing, laughing, and teaching the next generation the exact lessons I wish someone had taught six-year-old me: resilience, respect, confidence, and the courage to keep showing up. Watching those kids light up as they discover what they’re capable of is one of the purest joys I know.

Before becoming a full-time coach, I worked as a nurse, so I’m still the go-to person for every bump, bruise, sprain, cauliflower ear, or mystery “boo-boo” that shows up on the mats. I believe preventive health is the best medicine—and KMAA is one of the few places where people actually get healthier, not just fitter. I love being part of that transformation: helping members move better, feel stronger, recover smarter, and live happier, more capable lives.

When I’m not coaching the little ones, I’m geeking out over jiu-jitsu—breaking down positions, troubleshooting with students, and helping them unlock their next level. As a professional MMA fighter, I bring real fight-tested insight to every class I step into, whether it’s BJJ, striking, or popping in to support wherever needed.

When I am not teaching Little Dragons, I absolutely love geeking out over jujitsu. I love problem solving with students to figure out how to best help them level up. I am a professional MMA fighter and occasionally will pop in other classes as well!

Martial Arts Experience:

- Blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
- Black Band (Black Belt equivalent) in KMAA's MMA style (Wazakishindo)

- Black Band (Black Belt equivalent) in KMAA's striking style
- 3rd Degree Blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do
- 1st Degree Blackbelt in Judo

Christina Adcock

I am a Christian, wife, mother, daughter, gardener, cook, and occasional goat wrangler. You’ll usually find my family outside, fully embracing the idea of being a warrior in a garden. I love building things from the ground up alongside my husband and embracing the challenges that come with it.

Before stepping fully into martial arts, I practiced as an Occupational Therapist for several years. What I loved most about OT was its holistic nature — connecting the parts to the whole and helping people develop independence within themselves. That lens still shapes how I coach today.

Like many, martial arts became a place of self-expression for me. At KMAA, I found freedom, independence, and deeper self-discovery than I ever expected. I was seen, heard, and supported — and I believe everyone deserves that same experience. Martial arts is incredibly inclusive when taught with intention. My goal is to make sure that anyone who steps on our mats knows they belong here.

As a coach, I bring a holistic and individualized approach. I want to understand how you operate — how you think, move, and learn — so we can pursue your goals in a way that actually works for you. My mindset is simple: there is always another answer. I won’t just solve problems for you; I’ll equip you with the tools to build confidence, resilience, and independence for yourself.

I primarily coach kids classes, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and kickboxing, and I’ve had the privilege of coaching nearly every class KMAA offers — so you may see me anywhere on the mats.

- Brown Band in KMAA's MMA style (Wazakishindo)

- Brown Band in KMAA's Striking style

When I’m not at the gym I’m usually at home relaxing watching reels on Instagram on wrestling or mma, researching ancient history because it’s something about learning information they neglected in school excites me, playing video games, reading mangas because the animes leave ALOT of useful information which is just frustrating! Oh occasionally I coach high school wrestling too!

16 years deep into martial arts every person I’ve seen and interacted with came in searching for the same thing I did: self esteem and confidence! So it feels good to help others discover their strengths and weaknesses, help find their voice, and help them accomplish their goals. Martial arts has done so much for me and I just wanna do my best to help others become their best selves.

My superpower is relatability and comfortability. Lots of people come in are overwhelmed due to the fact that not only are they doing something new most classes are huge as well. I always try to make feel welcome by cracking jokes with them or just striking up conversations about what they do outside of the gym to ease their stress. I remember my first class and it was so intimidating I made sure to help us not go through that.

I teach morning & evening mma classes, BJJ classes, kids mma, and I still compete myself so no matter what I’m always available to help and answer your questions!!

- Blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

- Black Band (Black Belt equivalent) in KMAA's MMA style (Wazakishindo)

I’m someone who cares, stays curious, and is always working to grow. I’m a Mental Performance Consultant with a degree in sport and performance psychology. I’m fascinated by how the body moves and how the mind works, and that curiosity shapes how I train, coach, and live.

When I’m not at the gym, I enjoy spending time with my partner and our three dogs, rock climbing, and staying involved in things that keep me present and challenged.

I pour my heart into my students because this sport changed my life. I’ve experienced firsthand how impactful it can be.

Martial arts gives us a structured way to express ourselves through movement, creativity, and problem-solving. It also gives us a mirror and forces us to challenge doubt, ego, and vulnerability. It shows us who we are and allows us to grow. Helping others grow through this sport gives my work meaning.

My strength as a coach is in reading people, situations, and environments in real time. I truly try to see people, meet them where they are, and help them get to where they want to go.

With competition experience and a background in kinesiology and performance psychology, my coaching style is all about training hard, staying focused, and enjoying the process.

I primarily teach BJJ, including morning and competition classes, and coach mental skills. I also work with wrestling, MMA, and occasionally kickboxing throughout the week.

Outside of the gym you’re likely to find me doing any number of activities. No matter if it’s camping, cheffing, fostering animals, golfing , or random drives to nowhere , life is all about the adventure for me.

I pour into students because I was once that student and Martial arts absolutely changed my life. It helped me to truly find a better way. It has been one of my greatest adventures and continues to bless me everyday, so if I can be part of that for someone else in any way possible I jump at the opportunity.

My super power is that I simply care, for me the student is the end goal. For whatever amount of time I am coaching you as a student, thirty seconds or an hour, you are my only priority.

I teach mma, wrestling, Bjj, kickboxing and kids class. So if you attend KMAA you are likely to get me for any number of classes during the day, whether coaching or training myself.

I am a Christian, husband, father, son, and brother. I am a student and teacher. I play StarCraft 2 when life allows and I love a good story! From Shakespeare and Frankenstein, to Demon Slayer and Kaiju #8, if it’s good, I’m in!

I never had the opportunity to take martial arts when I was a kid. I wanted to deeply. In my mind, it offered safety and security in an unsafe world. So when I was able, I started taking BJJ classes. Now martial arts is an integral part of my life.

I pour my heart into students because I want them to experience the same freedom, joy, struggle, and growth that I have found. People are valuable. They need a way to grow into their best self. Martial arts provides that and I want to help people the way I have been helped.

One of my superpowers is helping people along their journey. Whether that is, “where’s the bandaids?” or “how do I break somebody’s arm?” I will help get you what you need.

My other superpower is helping the uncomfortable, scary, or unbearable be less. Whether that’s a 30 pound weight cut, a hard and scary topic you need to discuss, or your first day on the mats, I’m there to lend a hand.

I coach Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes in the evenings on varying days. But if you see me around the gym and have a question, I’d love to help!

I’m a mom of four incredible kids who constantly remind me how differently strength can show up. One is relentless and goal-driven. One is brilliant and sees the world from angles most people miss. One squeezes every ounce of joy out of life. And my youngest? Wild, hilarious, and full of energy.

My husband is the one who introduced me to martial arts — a world I once thought wasn’t for me. Now it’s one of the greatest gifts in my life.

When I’m not at the gym, I’m homeschooling (because the most important thing I teach my kids is how to live a meaningful life), remodeling our home, solving puzzles, or walking around with one earbud in listening to audiobooks, sermons, or music. And I will never say no to a really good cup of coffee or tea.

Why do I invest so much into our students?I know what it feels like to want to be seen.

Whether it’s a Little Dragon or an adult walking in after a long day, I want every single person who steps on the mats to feel special — not just trained, but truly seen. More than learning martial arts, I want students to walk away feeling their worth.

With kids, I see that spark — the desire to be known and capable. I love helping them build confidence early, not just in their bodies but in who they are.

With adults, I love watching the shift happen. Someone walks in stressed or unsure… and leaves standing a little taller. The mats don’t just build skill — they build identity. And being part of that process is something I don’t take lightly.

What's my Superpower? I bring enthusiasm. I bring energy. I bring belief.

I genuinely get excited about the curriculum our head coach has built. Every week I step into class is another opportunity for me to grow, learn, and become a better coach. I don’t show up just to run a class — I show up to create momentum.

If you’re tired, you can borrow my energy.

If you’re unsure, I’ll remind you what you’re capable of.

When you leave my class, I want you stronger — but more importantly, I want you confident.

I teach Little Dragons and Adult Kickboxing.

Little Dragons is where we build foundations — coordination, confidence, and joy in movement.

Adult Kickboxing is where I take our head coach’s thoughtfully designed curriculum and bring it to life in a high-energy way that challenges, sharpens, and empowers.

I’m a husband, girl dad, engineer, horror movie fan, Swiftie, mediocre baker, and my favorite dnd class is paladin.

You’ll often be surprised by random facts about random things, because I believe in knowing and sharing as much as possible about as many things as possible.

One of my favorite things about martial arts is the “aha!”moment, when a person overcomes an obstacle and their growth is immediate and apparent. Being a coach allows me to witness and sometimes help that breakthrough with far more regularity and with far more people than as a student alone. Additionally, KMAA is blessed with a variety of people with diverse backgrounds, viewpoints, and goals. As a coach, I have the unique opportunity to learn from all kinds of incredible people that walk in our doors, and celebrate their achievements.

I get excited about helping people identify their challenges in training and using a system to solve their issues. I view martial arts as a series of problems that can be understood and resolved in a systematic method. Regardless of someone’s background, reframing your thinking about an issue into a solvable challenge can lead to better outcomes.

I teach bjj classes in the evening, and a monthly class at an affiliated gym.

I’m a soon to be girl dad, an office manager, a sketch artist, a fishermen, a gamer, a fighter, and just all around a competitor.

When I’m not at the gym you’ll find me either in my sketch book burning through pencils and pens, in my kayak fishing for bass & trout catfish & carp, playing open world games or competitive shooters, but here recently I’ve been getting ready to be a dad!

I love coaching because there’s real joy in helping someone do something that they couldn’t believe they could do before. I love seeing the “lightbulb” go off in people’s heads and then seeing them light their own path to victory. I love helping people win the small victories within a task. I love to help people make sense of and take control of some part of this crazy, fast, and unforgiving world we live in. If I can help someone make it to the UFC or help someone hit their goal weight or help someone get routine and discipline in their daily lives or even help someone find some purpose; I will have more than fulfilled my job as a coach.

I find the greatest moments when coaching is when I hear a student say something like, “Oh, that’s not as hard as I thought” after giving them instruction or advice. I usually find myself connecting with customers easily, this allows me to explain things in a way that they hopefully understand so much that it makes the task seem so simple that they didn’t even know their body could do that. But all I did was make them think about a problem differently. And being at a gym like KMAA brings in a lot of different lifestyles and perspectives that I try to keep in mind while coaching. It’s not about ME or YOU it’s about US and what WE can figure out TOGETHER.

I teach morning and afternoon kickboxing classes. Occasionally I step in to assist mma classes

Outside of the gym…I am a Son to a happily married mother and father, a Catholic, as well as a brother to two younger brothers. I’m someone who enjoys competitive gaming, sports, an outdoors enthusiast, and also an area manager for my family’s Homecare company in Chattanooga.

One Sunday I was sitting in Church with my family. During the service, the preacher was talking about Gods love to all his children, and who all is “qualified” to receive his love. The preacher then said “God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called” and immediately I thought of KMAA because that was exactly me when I first walked into the doors of the gym. I had zero experience, and everyone in my life always told me there was no way I could fight, I had no business being in a cage, I should’ve started younger, etc. And although it was true, I wasn’t exactly “qualified” to be a fighter, KMAA did not care. They saw through the person I was and saw a better version of myself that I never thought possible. Fast forward today and I’m now living a life I only once dreamed of. All this to say, I want to do for others what this place and these people have done for me. Taken a lost, lonely, angry, confused individual, and given him a sense of purpose, meaning, a home, and true unconditional love.

My “Superpower” is my compassionate, authentic personality and charisma that God has given me. In other words, I’m a people person. But more importantly this part of myself has allowed me to develop genuine relationships with the members in our gym. Whether it’s what punch to throw next or what route to take next in their journey of life, my goal is to always be there for our members and build genuine connections with them. Never letting them feel like an outsider or alone, just as those before me did for me.

I teach mostly beginners MMA and kickboxing. I also sometimes assist in wrestling and BJJ!

I am a wife and mother to 2 boys, 2 cats, and a dog, I’m a high school social studies teacher and track and flag football coach by day. When not at work or the gym you’ll find me reading historical fiction or fantasy books or anything that gets me outside; especially hiking and kayaking. As long as my boys are in tow, let the adventures begin.

I’ve been at KMAA for over 10 years and competed 10 times. Martial Arts and KMAA changed my life so much. The coaches really poured into me and helped me more than I can express and I just enjoy passing that joy on to my students. There are so many positive things that Martial Arts does for those who train, I want all those things for my students. I also love helping students work through hard things and fix mistakes. Teaching sometimes feels like solving a puzzle and I love the process. We all have strengths and the beauty of martial arts is that all strengths translate. It’s fun finding ways to do that.

I’ve played many sports in my lifetime and I’ve learned that skills from one sport often translate into others. I love finding those connections. I also love helping students build confidence in themselves. Injecting fun and games into learning is also a great way to help students in their journey and I enjoy finding ways to do that. Some of the best learning happens during play, I really enjoy finding ways to ramp up the fun.

My name is Bryce, I am a student devoted to learning, including academically in Nursing, spiritually in Christianity, and physically and mentally in martial arts here at KMAA. When my time isn’t spent learning, I enjoy hunting (more times unsuccessfully), anything related to dirtbikes, and listening to music (more specifically, TOOL). I was introduced to martial arts through high school wrestling, and haven’t stopped since.

I coach youth because I believe that lessons learned through martial arts carry on to every other facet of life. I learned many valuable lessons on mats that I would have never learned anywhere else. I believe it is my responsibility to share these experiences with the next generation, and help them grow in ways that will lead them to success like others did before me.

My superpower is patience and understanding. Every kid learns differently, and my goal is to learn how each student accomplishes challenges and works through adversity, while positively teaching and encouraging, and most importantly making sure they have fun.

Outside of the gym, I’m a Christian who loves the outdoors—whether that’s camping, hiking, or swimming at the quarry. In my free time, I’m either reading, experimenting in the kitchen, or destroying my homies in UFC 5 on Xbox. I value faith, growth, brotherhood, and staying active in every area of life.

I pour my heart into our students because my coaches poured theirs into me. The lessons I’ve learned on the mats have shaped who I am far beyond martial arts. From discipline and resilience to character and leadership, what I was given changed my life—and I feel called to give that same investment, love, and guidance to the next generation.

My superpower is my team. Whether I’m coaching kids on the mats or helping families at the front desk, I’m backed by an incredible group of people. If there’s ever a question I don’t have the answer to, someone close by does. That means our students and parents are always supported, heard, and taken care of.

Ray Hewlett

Outside the gym, I am a professional fighter, a fiancé, and a proud owner of two dogs. In my free time, I enjoy golf, video games, and finding the best burritos around.

My passion for coaching comes from personal experience. Growing up in an abusive environment shaped my belief that everyone—regardless of age, size, or background—deserves the ability to protect themselves. Martial arts provided me with confidence, discipline, and personal security, and I am committed to passing those tools on to my students.

With experience in 15 MMA fights, I bring a practical, real-world perspective to training. I focus on teaching not only proper technique, but also the context in which those techniques are most effective. As a smaller weight-class fighter, I specialize in helping students learn how to apply techniques efficiently, emphasizing smart strategy, control, and confidence.

Im blessed to be a son and a brother from a loving family.

When I’m not at the KMAA or work, I love to go on walks with my partner, playing card games, and watching sports with friends.

Ive been at KMAA for 5 years ,and I love coaching our students because of the opportunity to pass down the knowledge and connections our staff and students have passed to me from the day I stepped in the building.

My superpower is my ability to listen to our students goals (no matter the goal) and make sure that each class we are closer to accomplishing that goal while making class fun and energetic for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you have these five specific pillars? Isn't that just marketing?

No — these five things are literally what make KMAA work the way it does every single day. Whānau keeps people coming back and feeling like they belong, CombatCare protects everyone so training can be intense without fear, TEO makes sure money never stops someone with heart from training, the CLA methodology actually teaches skill that transfers, and the KMAA Process turns good fighters into dominant ones. We didn't invent them to sound good; we built the gym around them because nothing else gets the same results.

How is KMAA actually different from other gyms in Knoxville?

Most places give you classes, maybe some community, and call it a day. We give you a deliberate family (Whānau), safety systems most gyms don't even think about (CombatCare), real financial access for people who need it most (TEO), training that builds fight IQ instead of just moves (CLA), and a proven winning blueprint for competitors (KMAA Process). No other academy in town — or even most in the Southeast — combines all five at this level. You feel the difference from your first class.

Do I have to care about all five pillars to train here?

No. You can come just for the training and still get world-class instruction. But most people end up loving the Whānau feeling, appreciating the safety, and feeling good knowing we're opening doors for others through TEO. The pillars are there so no one gets short-changed — you get the full KMAA experience whether you asked for all of it or not.

What if I'm shy/introverted? Will I feel out of place?

Not at all. We built Whānau on purpose so everyone — shy people especially — feels welcomed from day one. Coaches and members are trained to notice newcomers, introduce themselves, and make you feel like you've always been part of the family. Many of our quietest members now say it's the first place they've ever felt truly seen and supported.

Do you force people to socialize or is it optional?

Completely optional. We create natural mixing (cross-class drills, group events), but no one is required to participate in anything social. The culture works because it's genuine — people want to stick around, not because we make them.

How do I know your coaches are actually safe to train with?

Every single coach completes our 12-week onboarding academy, with two full weeks dedicated only to CombatCare protocols: recognizing grooming, enforcing consent, managing power dynamics, and maintaining boundaries. All of our coaches under go year back ground checks as well. We don't rely on background checks alone — we train behavior and accountability. Parents and groups that are normally not fully included in combat arts (female athletes, members of marginalized groups, etc.) especially tell us they feel more at ease here than anywhere else.

Is CombatCare just a marketing thing or is it really enforced?

It's enforced. We have zero tolerance for boundary violations, and every coach knows their job depends on upholding the protocol. We've had members tell us they switched gyms specifically because they felt safer here — that's the real-world proof.

The most common place it shows up is in the getting and receiving of explicit consent for when a coach of one gender is working with a student/athlete of a different gender, where explicit permission needs to be given before anyone touches anyone for any reason. However, it shows up in a hundred different ways throughout the day.

We are fanatical about inclusion, equality, and equity. They are mottos for us, they are a way of life.

Who actually qualifies for TEO scholarships?

Anyone with genuine heart and commitment who faces financial barriers — especially survivors of domestic violence, at-risk youth/foster families, LGBTQ+ individuals needing safe spaces, and veterans transitioning to civilian life. We review applications case-by-case; it's about need and warrior spirit, not a strict checklist.

The TEO system works off of your tax documents (the ones you send to the IRS). The closer you are to the poverty level based on your family size determines the size of the tuition payment you pay. If you are at (or below) the poverty line, then you will pay nothing for tuition, equipment, competition fees, etc. If you are at 10% above the poverty line, then you will pay 10% of our regular tuition costs, equipment fees, etc.

There are things other than your taxable income that the Elysium Organization looks at, but that's the beginning of the conversation for sure.

The Elysium Organization is for people who are struggling to make ends meet or who are doing everything in their power to be good stewards of all-too-limited resources. It is NOT for people who don't know how to budget and spend money poorly (going out drinking, spending money frivolously, etc.).

If you drive a nicer car than many of our coaches, TEO isn't for you. If you go out drinking regularly, TEO isn't for you. If however, you recently went through a divorce and want an outlet for yourself / your kids, TEO IS for you. If you're trying to make ends meet but run out of money before you run out of month, TEO IS for you.

If you NEED help, TEO IS for you.

How is TEO funded? Does it affect regular member pricing?

TEO is funded through a combination of donations, a portion of regular tuition, and dedicated fundraising — it doesn't raise prices for paying members. In fact, most people feel proud knowing their training helps open doors for others who need it most.

TEO has a number of affiliate gyms and those that are affiliated with TEO are required to host a number of seminars per year with the proceeds going to TEO. That, combined with other fund-raising activities, is how TEO is able to support students.

I've never heard of Constraints-Led or Ecological Dynamics — is this just a fad?

No — it's the modern standard used by top performance coaches and federations worldwide because it produces faster, more adaptable skill than traditional drilling. We switched two years ago and watched progress accelerate dramatically. If you've ever felt stuck repeating techniques that don't work in sparring, this is why.

There are two problems that every students needs to solve: #1 how to get better and #2 how to get better faster than everyone around them.

If you train anywhere, you'll probably increase your skill in the arts we teach.

However, at KMAA we are committed to continuing to compete at the highest levels in the world, and that means we need to not only increase our student(s) skill, but we need to do so faster than every other gym on the planet. If we don't increase skill faster than Jackson-Wink or Serra BJJ or Tristar or ATT Coconut Creek (the best MMA gyms in the world) then we'll never get on the stages these gyms are on and even if we could get on the stages where they are, we'll lose when we run into them.

Thus, KMAA, unlike every other gym that has never produced elite competitors like we have (the VAST majority of the gyms in TN) we need to increase our student(s) skills FAST.

The Ecological framework and CLA methodology accomplishes this goal.

This is why KMAA is so different. We're not just interested in you gaining skill, we're interested in you gaining skill faster than all the elite gyms in the world.

Will I still learn actual techniques?

Yes... and No — you learn something called Movement Solutions or Ideal Configurations since, in a very real sense, "techniques" are just manifestations of certain Invariant and/or Essential movement patters. However, whatever you call these things, you'll discover them through real problem-solving instead of memorizing someone else's version. You end up with moves that fit your body and work under pressure, not just look good in the air.

This video helps explain CLA in a way that is relatively easy to understand:

Is the KMAA Process only for pro fighters?

No — serious hobbyists, amateurs, and anyone who wants to maximize their potential can use elements of it. The full system is for competitors, but the principles (focus on what wins, mental protocols, efficient conditioning) bleed into every class and make everyone better.

In addition to this, a rising tide really does raise all boats. Thus, while our elite competitors experiencing KPI testing and Fight Skill Classes directly, all of our students benefit from the increased focus on the things which actually win; whether that's in a cage, in a ring, or in real life.

Why should I believe it's really that much better than other programs?

Take a walk down the KMAA Hall of Fame. Take a look at all the athletes KMAA has placed on major stages. All of those athletes were "home grown." They didn't go somewhere else, to learn under other coaches for weeks/months at a time when it was competition time - they stayed right here in Knoxville, training under Coach Eric, and training with all the regular coaches/students we have in the gym.

We're not asking you to take our reputation on faith alone. Look at our history. From Coach Eric's garage to the biggest MMA gym in the state of Tennessee. We've seen the results on our own mats long before spectators saw them on their TVs: faster finishes, better composure, higher win rates, and athletes who progress at a pace that surprises even them. It's private for a reason — the edge is real, and it's why fighters leave their home towns and/or drive hours to train here instead of staying local.
